BRITTANICA ONLY WATCH

21 August 2015

Transferring out attention from the ocean to the dry land allows us to retain our obsession with accuracy while adding our qualities. Exclusivity and elegance are intrinsic to the Brittanica

The Brittanica table chronometer builds on Thomas Mercer’s expertise in marine timekeeping. Encased in a finely brushed steel cabinet upholstered in fine white leather, the chronometer movement is sheltered behind a unique bas-relief dial. A set of extra-white crystals provides an all-round view on the Brittanica polished and bevelled movement. Sharp angles and straight lines form the geometric design of the elegant case.

Only Watch

Under the high patronage of HSH Prince Albert of Monaco, the Only Watch charity raises funds to carry out research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Its main fundraising event is the bi-annual Only Watch auction, featuring donations from some of the world’s most prestigious watch and clockmakers.

A striking design

Designer Jake Phipps has created a sleek octagonal case covered in soft white Foglizzo 1921 leather. The dial has an outer ring with anthracite-coloured minute indices in bas-relief created by the galvanic deposition of ruthenium. Its inner circle shows a hand-painted blue constellations map.

Chain-fusee drive

The calibre TM0802 features a fusee-and-chain transmission system that acts in a similar way to a gearbox, constantly changing gears to provide a consistent level of torque and stabilising the movement’s frequency. Ticking at the rate of 14,400 vibrations per hour, the escapement works in close conjunction with a balance of ovalising type that is unique to Thomas Mercer.
